Actually, in most cases, a person "falls" into infatuation or a crush.
You GROW IN TO love!

First you become friends, enjoying each others company, and doing things you both like together, and learn about each other, and find out if you can cope with each others bad habits and idiosyncracies, and you grow to love each other.

LOVE = mutual respect, admiration, caring, kindness, nurturing, looking out for the others best interests, and both putting 100% into the relationship.

LOVE is action more than feeling ... but the feeling is there, too ... deep down ... but for those times that you don't "feel", the action remains when you have committed to each other. This is what takes people through the difficult patches of relationship.

no, but i think it's important to be happy. That's why it's common misconception to say that you have to be in love to be happy...that isn't always the case. you can be in love with your job, a book, an author's work, your country but it doesn't necessarily mean a love with an opposite sex.

necessary? it depends on what is the objective.

being in love is pretty much as good as it gets, but the cost of a failed relationship can be devastating (it depends on how invested you are in it)
