I am an American and have never personally met a Canadian so I cant say I hate them for one reason or another. Does this go way back to the 1800's ? I don't get it .

Clint you bone head. I didnt say ( I ) hated Canadians.... its just a general feeling I have gotten from game playing lobbies. That is , seeing what others are saying to each other..maybe thats a poor source of info but it just strikes me as strange as to why all the fighting because of where you live... much like Ireland with the fighting between catholics and protestants? Same as other coutries ( Iraq ? ) that fight over the different religions.

sphere_68 - I agree with everything you have said. I am betting the majority of people in the U.S. hate the fact the G W did this to our country and would like to see him punished for this. ( I know I would! )

Summation: We don't hate the US or the people at all. We just hope that the bigger picture could be looked at more.
Speaking as Canadian, I can say that we don't specifically hate US citizens. Most of us just don't know what the heck you all are doing to your country, yourselves, and the world. We can't seem to get how you all could vote G.W. Bush in again. The only whole hearted political support you'll get from our government with Bush is the, now in power PC Party, but it's a minority government, and needs the Liberals, NDP, and Bloc to do anything. What does this mean? We fight for autonomy, and our identity.
We can agree to disagree on many things some of which being same sex marriages, wars in Afghanistan, Iraq, etc.(but we still have troops there). Stem cell research, the missile shield, and softwood lumber are a few others.
We are allies to the north, autonomous, and multicultural. We respect differences and cultures around the world. So, we generally don't hate the US.
We just really don't like what happening to the world because of your country sometimes. Most of us don't like that the US, at times, thinks it's the world police(ie. we don't understand how you all allowed your president to go to Iraq under the premise of WMD's, without UN support, find nothing and still hang around. The war wasn't justified, and if it was any other country in the world there would be people crying out for tribunals for war crimes(prisoner torture, unwarranted invasion, etc.). Remember though...we are stil there with you. We have troops there with the US. It's kinda like a "What did you get us into again?!?" sort of feeling.
It really isn't fair to just talk about Canadians. Other countries feel the same way about each other. I think a lot of our differences and animosity is due to the political party in power now in the US, and a general feeling that the US govt doesn't play fair(ie. look into softwood lumber dispute)....read the "Overview of the dispute" for a synopsis
http://www.cbc.ca/news/background/softwood_lumber/
At the same time we help you all out in times of need, and petty disputes are forgotten.
PRESIDENT BUSH-" Three years ago, Halifax and other towns and villages -- from Newfoundland to Manitoba to the Northwest Territories to British Columbia -- welcomed, as the Prime Minister mentioned, more than 33,000 passengers on diverted flights. For days after September the 11th, Canadians came to the aid of men and women and children who were worried and confused and had nowhere to sleep. You opened your homes and your churches to strangers. You brought food, you set up clinics, you arranged for calls to their loved ones, and you asked for nothing in return.
One American declared, "My heart is overwhelmed at the outpouring of Canadian compassion. How does a person say 'thank you' to a nation?" Well, that's something a President can do. And so let me say directly to the Canadian people, and to all of you here today who welcomed Americans, thank you for your kindness to America in an hour of need."

Most of us just would hope that better decisions can be made. People have power, but it seems at time that the US just thinks about the US(ie. Kyoto protocol http://www.cbc.ca/news/background/kyoto/us.html and http://www.nrdc.org/globalWarming/akyotoqa.asp ). It seems like the only answer to any problem is the military, as one person posted in this thread, and that isn't the case. Problems don't go away if you kill people. Yes, we have a military, and that the kind of mentality that we hate. Like the worth of a people is based on how many people they can kill or threaten, or if something goes wrong to bring in the military.
To quote a former Prime Minister:
"Americans should never underestimate the constant pressure on Canada which the mere presence of the United States has produced. We're different people from you and we're different people because of you. Living next to you is in some ways like sleeping with an elephant. No matter how friendly and even-tempered is the beast, if I can call it that, one is effected by every twitch and grunt."- Pierre Trudeau
Why ask this question? You seem to think that we(Canadians) have to agree with the US on everything, correct? Are you asking why people in general hate each other? If that is the case it has nothing to do with nationality, but rather human nature.

Generally I don't think they do, of course there are a small number on both sides that probably do but more than likely even they can't tell you valid reasons as to why they 'hate' each other. Unfortunately all races seem to have a generalized and subsequently unfair view of others, bottom line don't judge all by some and don't judge without knowledge, it just plain hurts everyone.

If Americans hate Canadians, I don't know about it. I live in the southwest though, so maybe if I lived closer to the Canadian border I'd have a different opinion. I hope we don't hate each other.

They hate us because they're jealous. We're not, so they hate us more. On the other hand, we don't particularly hate them; we feel sorry for them because next to us, they're the ones that never get asked to the prom.
