The person I'd like to see get help has been diagnosed schitzoprhenic and is a violent and reckless drunk, a huge danger to herself and others. She has a police record of drunken violent behavior including assult and destruction of property. She knows she is an alcoholic but refuses to believe she has any other problems. She needs help but refuses to get it, even though she has been institutionalized (voluntarily) a few times for trying to commit suicide.

Only the STATE can decide if an individual is unable to decide for him or herself medically, and that is only if they are a harm to themselves or others. Many adults are placed into state custody and institutionized after harming themselves or others and taken to a local hospital where authorities are called and guardianship is placed.

This probably depends on whether you're a family member or not. And if she's already in the social care system or is just independently out there running around. Generally, people have to commit some kind of offense to get committed. Too frequently, they commit a crime and end up in jail, when they really need the help of a mental health professional. If she's not hurting anyone currently, you won't be able to get the police to help out. The next time, call them.

That is really not for you to judge. God may have some plans for her to help others who find themselves in similar situations when she finally gets back on her path to enlightenment. Don't rush to take away someone's freedom. We're loosing too much freedom as it is because of the right wing scare tactics. I can't believe that people so easily give up their rights to freedom out of fear. F R E E D O M!

It is very hard to get someone commited. Doctors are afraid that they will have a lucid moment and sue them later. She would have to be so out to lunch that she doesn't respond to verbal commands and just drooling etc...otherwise they just medicate ,hold ya 72 hrs. max and sent ya on your way.
