I cannot answer for all Atheists. I personally go out of my way not to upset believers, but I DO also go out of my way to try and make believers understand (not agree with, just understand) our point of view. I've found that many Christians find the mere questioning of their faith upsetting. But if your faith is strong enough it should hold up to any criticism. Atheism is the assertion that there is not enough evidence to prove the existence of a supreme being. For myself, I see no conclusive evidence and have not felt any form of divine presence. It is up to those asserting that a god exists to PROVE that god does exist. Until that happens or I feel any type of divine force in my life, I'd be lying to say I believe.

I am an Atheist and I don't enjoy upsetting ANYONE. Whatever a person chooses to believe is their own decision and no one has the right to impose their values or beliefs on anyone else.
In saying that however, every now and then I meet someone who does believe in God and tries to force THEIR beliefs on me! I mean, if I say that I'm an Atheist, do they think that that means I just haven't made my mind up yet or something? I have met quite a few believers who are quite happy to just say, "Ok, that's what you believe and this is what I believe. Let's just agree to disagree." But then there are some who, no matter what I say, will keep ramming their beliefs down my throat, even breaking out the old 'hell-fire and damnation' speech!
So, I think it's a two-way street. Yes, there are some atheists who get some sort of sick pleasure out of tormenting and ridiculing believers, but there are also some believers who torment and ridicule atheists too.
Bottom line? There are always gonna be people in this world who disapprove of you and the choices you make. And some people just can't help themselves from voicing their opinions.
But me personally? I wouldn't try to be-little or upset anyone for what they believe or don't believe in.

i may only be 14, but i am athiest. I may not believe in what my friends do (they are all christians or buddhists) but i would not dream of upsetting them because of it. They have every right to believe what they want. What I get upset about is that when people find out i am athiest, they say that i am stupid and an idiot for not believing in God. Everyone has the right to believe what they want, even if they choose not to believe in anything. I wish people would give athiests a break. If athiests do upset god believers it's probably because they r sick of them being mean about being an athiest.

I think god believers upset atheists more. Seriously I believe what I believe and I don't want you to try and convert me every couple of minutes.

Yes, the other day I was thinking about the same thing. My question sounded like this: why do they always mock catholics? (I think, there are more non-believers in catholic areas, than anywhere else)
They quote from the Bible, ask about the book, the written part of the faith not my belief. They don't understand, that data and info and arguments will not convert me.
Thank you.

would it not be better to simply stop pushing beliefs and needs onto others and allow each the freedom to make a personal choice to be like minded or not without judgment or slander? I follow the path of ideas and deeds. Ideas bring about creation, communication, change, growth, understanding and enlightenment and deeds solidify those ideas into actions. conformist faith based doctrines suppress individualism and condemns rational thought and enables a mundane existence but humans have the ability above all species to place rational thought to questions.faith doctrine demands blind faith without question or opposition. without a reasonable answer for a life time of servitude and devotion, would creat cattle of men.Ask yourself, would you Rather be the wind or the sheep?

If they get upset at being asked to think about things in a different way, or think at all, then yes.

I don't look at it that way. I do not do it to upset. I just tell them in a mild and calm manner, that " I have an opinion on what to believe in also..."

I absolutely love it. I think believing in god is pretty rediculous, and if christians have the audacity to try to proselytize me, I feel like i've got the right to it right back.
