network adapter can be an PCI Ethernet card in the back of the computer. It looks like the telephone jack but a bit bigger.

a lot of people use wireless ethernet adapters by USB now, easier just plug in USB port and u're connected to the network.

Matters if you have a separate network card or one that is integrated on the mother board. Look on the back of your PC for something that looks like a phone jack, but wider. If you see one, you have found where your network adapter is located.

It may also be located on the motherboard. Look in the back of the computer for a "fat" telephone socket. It has 8 wires instead of 6.
It may have a symbol like this:

o-|
|-o
o-|
