If you are talking about mp3 player or mp4 player. It probably depends on your budget.
If you are just searching for a portable audio device, mp3 player will be good enough. Just ensure that the memory space is big enough satisfy your hunger for music. It's getting rather common nowadays, you can ask around for recommendation for the brands, value for price model.
However, if you are looking for a portable video device, beside a portable dvd, vcd player. Mp4 player might be a good idea. But please take note that with a small screen mp4 player, there's nothing much you can look at except noticing some moving figures... A mp4 player with a reasonable size of screen will probably cost a lot, not to mention that, the memory space is important also!

Mp4 is video mp3 is audio and your question doesn't make any sense.
