I'm getting my first job at a retail store soon (most likely PETvalue) and I'm not the greatest at math. I want to work as a cashier, but Idk what to expect, and how to use a register. This is my first job ever, so I hope those things are idiot proof, haha. I'm guessing the change amount due to the customer will be displayed on the screen as well? please help, thanks.

Most of the time the register does the math for you. If it doesn't they will probably have a calculator close by for that purpose. They will train you on the register. Just relax and do your best and you should be fine. Don't sweat it if you make a mistake, cause we all do one time or another. Good Luck!

Yes, the machine will tell you how much change to give back. If you can use a computer, you can definitely use a cash register, because they're a lot more simple. An important skill to learn is how to count back change, to ensure that you give the correct amount to the customer. Let me give you an example:

A customer buys something and it costs $13.62. They pay with a twenty-dollar bill. Your cash register says to give them back $6.38, so you take out a five dollar bill, a one dollar bill/coin, a quarter, a dime and three pennies. This is what you say and do:

"Thirteen sixty-two and thirty-eight makes fourteen [hand them the thirty-eight cents]. One makes fifteen [hand them the one dollar bill] and five makes twenty [hand them the five dollar bill]."

This is the best technique for making sure you give them the right amount of change, so they don't come back later saying you owe them a million dollars!

For non-POS systems, you usually enter the amount of an item (do not use a decimal: For Example: $6.28=628). Enter the department. Press Subtotal. Enter Amount customer gives you, Press cash/total. Make the change it tells you to.
