Vietnam has a long history of wars and fighting, mostly with China. It has become a very peaceful country over the past couple decades, and they get along with everyone now - even China. This peaceful era has allowed Vietnam to reduce military spending from being most of their economy to less than one billion dollars annually.

Since transitioning to an open market economy, Vietnam has made strong economic ties with Australia, Europe, most of the Asian countries and rapidly building a strong relationship with the U.S. It is very likely that in a few years the U.S. will be Vietnam's most important ally.
