i "upgraded" an old system now the os wont boot and the bios doesnt have the right cpu info, and im trying to reinstall the os but its goin uber slow, any help will be appreciated. 300mhz p2 -> unknown celeron. 256mb pc133 ram. gateway 2000 (1997).

find out what speed, and voltage that celeron is supposed to be, then see if you can make the necessary adjustments to the main board or bios.
There may be voltage settings to change, front side bus speed, and multiplier.
These upgrades aren't always (kinda rarely actually) plug and play.

You have not mentioned the model of your motherboard. Find it on the motherboard.

If your motherboard doesn't detect the CPU speed and core voltage automatically then it must have jumpers for setting these.
If you don't have the user's manual, you will have to download it and check if the board supports your current CPU.

you cant just stick any processor into any motherboard. you have to make sure the motherboard supports it and see if there is anything you need to adjust...such as clock speed.

its a compatibility issue... your motherboard doesn;t support your processr... if ppossible, upgrade your motherboard too....
