Of late, I find my plants in one plot withering away. These are chilli and capsicum plants. On digging the soil around the roots of the plants, I found a number of slugs sticking to the stem and roots of the plants. I would like to know if slugs are responsible for the withering of the healthy plants. And if so, what is the remedy to rid the soil of these slugs.

The slugs certainly could be the cause of your plants distress.
1) Pick the nasty besties off & squash them
2) Fill shallow dishes with beer set around the plant area, they'll get into it & drown. Really they luv beer.
3) Sprinkle plain old table salt on them, it kills them on contact.
4) Go to garden supply store & by slug killer(Seven or Disidous Earth)

All of the answers involving beer are great. Grape juice works also. Sprinkle diatomaceous earth (get it cheap at swimming pool stores) around plant. It will kill the slugs. Put a copper barrier tape around plant (get in plumbing section of home depot store) they will not cross it. And when you find a ball of the nasty little buggers, smother them with salt, they will dissolve

My mom used to put a small saucer of beer on the ground next to the plants. Make sure the lip of the saucer is at ground level. They love the beer, and die. That is a natural way to go. There are products at any nursery or garden shop as well.

There is a powder that works on most all bugs, but it is fairly dangerous to humans too. It is called seven (pronounced se'-vin). I have not ever tried it on consumable plants, but I dont think that it absorbs into the plant as after a rain fall you need to reapply it as the bugs will come back. But I would read the instructions about food bearing plants if you plan to use it.

You can put something small and scratchy like gravel, crushed shells and such cause its hard for them to slide across. Also they love beer, fill up shallow bowls of beer and they will walk right in and drown.

Grab a bottle of beer and a plastic bowl, they climb in for the beer and die.I don't know why this works but it does. My grandmother told me about it and it did work.
