I started with a bay, rosemary, thyme, sage, oregano, chives, rocket, mint (keep contained), lemon balm and lavender, they all have been with me for years with minimal maintenance, and the 1st 4 I find handy for cooking even in winter. Parsley will go to seed if too dry, and in its 2nd year. I add more every summer and now have Rue, Hyssop, Vervain, Clary Sage, Savoury, Bergamot (nice flower too), Heartsease Pansy, Evening Primrose, St. John's Wort, Lovage, Comfrey, Nasturtium and garlic chives. Have planted all ornamentally.
And am saving a fortune not having to buy in shops! good luck, read labels in garden shops for ideas and get a book.

Best herbs for herb garden-
rosemary, basil, oregano, thyme, parsley, cilantro, chives, mints of all varieties, bay laurel, curry plant, passionflower, sage, dill, feverfew, yarrow. Many herbs are indigenous to the meditterenean and like fairly sand soil with good drainage and not a lot of fertilizer. If you can imagine 1/2 mile in from the sea how the soil would be make it so for herbs

Rosemary, basil, chives and parsely are all hearty and easy to grow. All they need is water and full sun every day. Start it now so you can harvest throughout the summer. Just buy the pre-started herbs at a garden store. Seeds are never guaranteed.
That was the type of herb garden you were refering to, right?
