It pretty much is free now. All you need is an AIM name and you can access everything. I dumped them because I was tired of paying for features I could get for free.

I once thought there would be free Internet service. Broadband is the future of Internet providers. AOL is working hard to partner with DSL and cable providers. They have 27 million members. They're not going away anytime soon and they will not become a free service. They will eventually have most of their customers on broadband.

HAHAHHA Hell no.

They'll either sink the service or keep charging for it indefinitely because they have been losing massive market share lately. It's very unexpected for AOL to go free.
