I think that you mean Thestrals. I was doing some research online, and I have found that The Harry Potter Lexicon (www.hp-lexicon.org) explains them best:
Thestrals are huge winged horses with white shining eyes, dragonish faces and necks, and skeletal black bodies. They are attracted to the smell of blood. Thestrals are invisible to anyone who has not seen death, which means that few of the students in Hagrid's Care of Magical Creatures classes could see them during Harry's fifth year. They are amazingly magical animals, however. People used to think they were bad omens, that seeing them meant bad luck, but this is just superstition (OP21, OP34, FB). Thestrals have an amazing sense of direction and move magically fast through the air. Dumbledore used them to travel if he didn't care to Apparate (which probably explains how he got to the Ministry (PS16) and maybe even how Hagrid got to the Hut on the Rock by flying (PS5)).
The herd at Hogwarts started with a male and five females. A number of them have been born since, beginning with one named Tenebrus, which is a special favorite of Hagrid's (OP21). They are used to pull the school carriages from the train station up to the school (OP10). Harry and a group of students flew Thestrals from Hogwarts to the Ministry of Magic in an attempt to rescue Sirius (OP34).

They are called Thestrals. They are significant because they were a means of transportation in the book. Harry, Ron, Hermione, Ginny, Neville and Luna rode them from the Forbidden Forest to get to the Ministry of Magic in the fifth book - Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.

They're called 'thestrals'. You can only see this if you've seen death. In Harry's case he saw Cedric die in Book 4 and Luna saw her mom die. They're as significant but it did help Harry and co. in Book 5 when they needed a ride. Hope this helped!

They are Thestrals, and it's not that only Harry and Luna can see them, it's that only someone who has seen death can see Thestrals. Apparently, you must also have fully comprehend that you have seen death, because Harry saw his parents die when he was a baby, but he couldn't see the Thestrals because he did not understand that what he had seen was people dying.

The thestrals do come into the story, but only in the same way that other animals have. All the strange animals have been either a temporary threat or handy friends to have. In other words, they're not extremely important, but interesting.

They are Thestrals, something someone can see only if they've seen another person die.
I'm guessin you haven't read the books. If you are just going by the movies, they aren't all too important.
Even if you read the books, they play very little importance, even in the following books.

They are Thestrals, which are horse-like black creatures that live in the forbidden forest. They are significant because you can only see them if you yourself has seen someone die.
