judging by your perception of plants i would suggest plastic flowers
most flowers are only temporary
few are bushes
and the ones that are need trimming
and only have flowers a small part of the year
your question contradicts
you are willing to work
but want plants, that dont need work
with out details as to what climate you live in
in what part of the country and east or west America or altitude
it is very hard to give a relevant answer
ask this question again with these details
and there are many gardening people here who will be able to give you an answer after that

1.Potentella makes a lovely small bush, and can take a lot of abuse, comes in several colors of flowers from bright yellow to pink. The flowers last and last, unlike most shrubs.
2. Lilac grows to what ever heighth you allow up to 12 feet (aprox). It too is dependable, and takes little care except for some water.
3. Wild flowers thrive with little or no care,
4. Day lilies flower all summer and only need water.
5 if you have acidic soil, (mountain areas usually) any form of evergreen is low maintainance, requiring only water, and if soil is not acidic, an occassional spray of a product thats makes the soil in that area acidic.
6. bachelor buttons thrive and return every year, if you keep the dead heads picked off they will bloom from June till after it frosts.
7. Hen and chicks will grow in any teeny bit of dirt, and take little or no care at all.
8 Autumn Sedum is another that forms a bushy plant, and just thrives on a little water. It returns every spring.
9 Most roses need lots and lots of care, but the wild rose, the regosa rose is just that , wild, it needs nothing except for maybe a pruning of dead branches once a year.
10. flowering vines are a thing of beauty, and the clemantis (many, many varieties, and every color there is, grows up to 20 feet in heighth, and if you plant something rather large (to shade the roots) it will continue to flower for many many years to come.
11. One of the very easiest is the morning glory, it reseeds itself, so will return every year, is lovely to look at, and takes almost no care.
and can even cover unsightly poles or whatever.
12 marigolds are a cant fail flower, and they are a natural enemy to bugs, bugs stay away from them. Planting them with any other flowers or vegetables help protect them. They are prolific, and come in many sizes and shades of yellows and oranges.
13 Ivys of any size, or description is always a joy, and take little or no care.
Most plants need only water and sunshine, and most plant nurseries are more than willing to offer any assistance or suggestions.
Dont be afraid to try anything, you are only out the price of a package of seeds or a few dollars for a lovely plant if for some reason that it fails, and you may find that you have years of enjoyment for a very small price.
