Share files over network?

Question

I want to share files over a network. I set up the network with the network wizard. I used a disk to set it up on the second computer. The 2 computers on the network are windows xp PRO and Home. They connect to a lynksys wrt54g router, which in turn connects to the internet. I have enabled printer and file sharing.
When I go to view the network on the home edition computer, I can see both computers. But, when I try to access the xp pro computer, I recieve an error message saying I don't have permission. I can't even access the viewing on the windows pro computer. A similar message appears. I can't write the error messages right now, so check back soon.
So, Am I doing something wrong? I heard I need something from the windows xp disc, but I don't have a windows xp disc. I think it was something about BIOS. I am not sure. I only have a windows 98.

I think it also has something to do with the AEGIS protocol, not bios.

You're gonna want to make a new folder, lets say on the desktop of the XP one for now....

Right click that folder and go to sharing.

Should be a checkbox that says share this folder on the network.

Should all be there.

Listen, it may be very simple. I had a simular problem with a computer on my network. I had them both set up but I did not use the network setup wizard due to my having a completely wireless network. This created a situation in which the Windows OS wanted me to set up "connection sharing" even though I did not need do use connection sharing. Using connection sharing opens up the guest account which is a security risk and I did not wish to open it up when I am not using it nor need it or the connection sharing. So, I just manually rigged my network. I used a good book called Windows XP Inside Out. I just love this book and read it all the time as you can't put all that information in ones head in one setting. So, I learned how to set up a network manually. I was having a problem though with getting my system to allow my fiance's computer to access my folders. The printers where being shared no problem as well as all his files and stuff. But when I tried to access my files from his computer I got that "access denied" stuff too, "do not have the proper permissions". So, after combing through my book(s) I bought a few more too, I discovered I had set the "my documents" file to "private" when I first set up my system last year. This was what was blocking access. In order for my folders and files to be accessed from another networked computer I had to go in and fix this. You see, every folder and file in a "private" folder inherit the permissions of the "parent" folder. The "My Documents is the mother of all folders, with "my pictures, my music, etc all stored inside. So, I had to go into the Properties of the "My Documents" folder and adjust the sharing tab to allow access by taking off the protected status.

What I did was click the start button and then right click on "My Documents" and choose "Properties". Click on the "sharing" tab. Look for a box beside "make this folder private". If there is a check mark next to it this is the problem. Just unclick it and then click Ok till it is all closed. Then you should be able to access the folders. It worked quickly and competely for me.

Make sure both computers are on the same Workgroup. To do this, right click My Computer, then click Properties. Click the Computer Name tab and you will see a field called "Workgroup". If this is not the same for both computers, click the "Change" button and type in the correct Workgroup (NOT Domain) so they match up. You'll have to restart after doing this.

In Windows Explorer, Right click the folder you want to share and then click "Sharing and security". Click the checkbox beside "share this folder on the network" and if you want the other computer to be able to add, delete, or change files in that folder, click the checkbox beside "allow network users to change my files".

have u tried sharing a folder on each pc?
