Javascript is a good language to learn if you are going to be any web development, especially with AJAX becoming such a strong part of the web, but you should not expect to learn javascript alone and be able to do a whole lot.
If you are going to do web development, you really need to couple javascript with a server-side language like ASP, JSP, or PHP. That's where the real stuff happens. Javascript can only do so much.

Right now Javascript is the next 'big thing'. More and more people are learning it and using it to create an interactive experience between the user and the website.
However, Javascript itself isn't enough (though there are a few jobs out there for JAVA programemrs). Learning additional web languages such as ASP, ASP.NET, PHP, Python, etc will really help you out and make you a bigger asset (providing you know these languages inside and out) to companies.

Javascript is an auxillary language. It'll help out with any server scripting language you know as your primary.
You should focus on either PHP, Ruby (on rails), ASP.net, or Coldfusion, etc. with a database BEFORE learning javascript.

yes, but this day and age and I would start learning something else first instead of just jumping head first into javascript.

Not unless you have a strong desire to program with it. I would recommend learning PHP. I think it's a lot more useful.
