click messenger tab at top of Yahoo messenger window
scroll down to click preferences,
then click alerts & sounds,
next hilite "I receive a message in Yahoo mail"
place check mark in the boxes of your choice
(I have bottom 2 boxes checked on mine, cuz I don't like annoying sound)
last step is to click ok

"right click" on your taskbar in the empty area by your clock and your sub-menu should appear.
then click on "customize notifications".
this will give you all the little task bar icons of present and past on your desktop, fiind your yahoo mail alert and click it to change he "hide when inactiive" to "always show".
And this is important: make sure you click out of the little box you change the settings for before you click into another to change, because if you scroll to another it will change the setting you just had placed, kind of something goofy with who ever designed that part of the yahoo machine.
ANd if that doesnt make it work you need to right click again in same area and go to propertys and either click "hide inactive icons" or unclick it till you get customize, click it and there you can adjust what yo want to show or not.
DONT FORGET TO APPLY setting when done and do restarts.
