One should first realise the meaning of life to have a better life. Are we living for ourselves or for the society at large? Then we will know where we have to contribute for betterment. There is nothing wrong in bettering one's life as long it is not at the cost of other's. Religion plays a role here.
There is another way of looking at life. What is the aim of this life what are the goals I have set for myself to achieve? This will usher in better life in the social sense.
One when he considers he has a role to play as a person that of a son, brother, father etc., in the home and a contributor to the society of what little he could, then this also results in bettering one's life.

Get more in-touch with yourself. Take a couple of minutes a day and find a quiet place. If you live in a city, find a quiet room where people won't distract you. If you live in the country, go outside and find a spot where no one else will find you and just take a couple of minutes to relax. Don't think about what you have to do tonight or tomorrow, don't think about work or school or family, just think about what you want and about yourself. Think about what you really want out of life. Maybe set some goals for yourself like tomorrow I will get my work done early and I will spend an extra half an hour with my child or with my boyfriend or just reading a book. Find yourself and what you want and then get what you want. That will give you a better life. At least I hope it will, because I am going to try it. ;)
Also, it might make thinkgs better and make your life more enyoyable if you look for the beauty in life. This might sound stupid, but I go around and pretend almost like I have a camara with me and I look for a picture in everything. Even things that you might think are ugly or annoying. For example if you are caught in a traffic jam, look for something that you could take a picture of. Say two cars down from you there is an old car that should have been in the junk yard years ago, but someone put some time and effort into it and kept it running. That car has alot of character and could make a beautiful picture. Or beyond the traffic jam, there is a beautiful skyline. Make the world arond you beautiful instead of seeing all the bad in it, and your life will improve.
Maybe, of nothing seems to be working for you, you need to start again fresh, move to a new place, or at least take a vacation. Change your surroundings and maybe it will change your outlook on life. Good luck.

Go placidly amid the noise and haste,
and remember what peace there may be in silence.
As far as possible, without surrender,
be on good terms with all persons.
Speak your truth quietly and clearly;
and listen to others, even dull and ignorant;
they too have their story.
Avoid loud and aggressive persons;
they are vexations to the spirit.
If you compare yourself with others,
you may become vain and bitter;
for always there will be greater
and lesser persons than yourself.
Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.
Keep interested in your own career, however humble;
it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.
Exercise caution in your business affairs;
for the world is full of trickery.
But let this not blind you to what virtue there is;
many persons strive for high ideals;
and everywhere life is full of heroism.
Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection.
Neither be cynical about love for in the
face of all aridity and disenchantment
it is perennial as the grass.
Take kindly the counsel of the years,
gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in
sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself
with imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue
and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline,
be gentle with yourself.
You are a child of the universe,
no less than the trees and the stars;
you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you,
no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.
Therefore be at peace with God,
whatever you conceive Him to be,
and whatever your labors and aspirations,
in the noisy confusion of life,
keep peace with your soul.
With all its shams, drudgery,
and broken dreams,
it is still a beautiful world.
Strive to be happy.

Yes indeed!!! the best way to have a better life is to help others make their lives better or easier. The greatest gift that you can give to someone who is sick or elderly is your time. If you take out 20 minutes per week to visit someone who is elderly, poor or ill, you will be repaid with a clear conscience and God's blessing for the next day. You will feel better about yourself and with the added confidence and attitude, you will perform better at your work and at home. Giving your time and efforts to any volunteer project is never wasted. You will bring happiness and hope to others that you never imagined! Think about how sweet it will be for someone else visiting you when you are in need!

Identify your dreams. Write them down on a piece of paper, and hang them on your wall in a place you will have to see them EVERY DAY. Then, start researching what it is you want to do with your life. For example, if you want to be a painter, look into the types of paints that exist, listen to recommendations on techniques etc. etc. etc. Also, no matter what you want to do, READ ABOUT IT. Head to a library, get all the books that you think would apply to your goal, take them home and read them.
Now, here is where it gets difficult for me to help you. Because I do not know what it is that you value: money, love, talents, etc., I cannot help you with your case. However, I can provide you with a wonderful route to follow that will make you feel like you're in heaven.
Start with a Talent!!! Playing guitar, dancing, carpentry, anything, anything at all. A skill will effect everything in your life.
So, when you are done reading up on the skill you are trying to develop, and you have gained some knowledge, confidence, and the necessary tools to start (tools, instruments etc.), do it for 40 days in a row. It may seem like alot but it is necessary. And try not to miss a day but don't freak out if you do, missing one day here or there will not kill you, just try your absolute best to stick to 40 days.
What will happen is you will effectively create a new addiction for yourself. Instead of your mind telling you to do what it is that you don't like or shouldn't do, your mind will tell you to go pick up that Violin, and your body will follow. Think about this for awhile, and if it makes sense, try it out.
A talent will bring you confidence because you will have command over something in the world. Almost all talents can bring you money, maybe not extreme wealth, but if you are ever in need you have something that can fulfill that need. Also, if you can research it, then others can too, and you can find a community for yourself.
Rules of thumb: 1:Read your butt off, knowledge is power.
2:Take care of your health and your happiness will follow.
3:Live in harmony with the world outside your mind and the world within
4:Love yourself, and know that you are loved.

First of all be yourself. You will never enjoy life following behind someone or pretending to be another person.
Because at the end of the day you are still you!
Be content with your inner self.
Eat healthy.
Stay away from negative people they are contagious (believe me).
Be good to your friends and family. But stay away from the ones thats not good to you!
Never steal from your friends or family. "hell dont steal from anyone.
Try to always tell the truth. Because one lie lead to another.
Dont do anything sneaky to loved ones, eventually they will find out. Because what goes around comes around. THAT IS A KNOWN FACT!
Treat others how you want to be treated.
And one more thing LOVE AND RESPECT YOURSELF because if you dont nobody will.
