When this dragon is seen in picts or it is a scuplure it is holding a pearl or glass ball. I was told by a good friend that the ball is its destiny and if it losses it or something happens to the ball the dragon will die. I believe it was an Irish Dragon but not 100% sure.

I believe you may be thinking of a Chinese dragon. They are often seen clutching or reaching for a pearl or orb. The orb represents universal chi (life) energy. Dragons are beneficial creatures to the Chinese (the People of the Dragon), sort of like angels are in Western traditions. The link below has more interesting dragon info!

In Chinese art, you will see the dragon clutch th pearl, a stone/jem of great power. Other interputations say it is an orb or the globe, such as the world is within their grasp.
It is also said that it is the dragon's tear, and they hold great powers too.

You may be thinking of one of Kuan Yin's attendants, Lung-wang Nu, the "daughter of the Dragon-king." The lotus sutra tells a story about her proving her enlightment by giving up a most precious jewel (often portrayed in statuary as a pearl).

Kuan Yin is the Boddhisatva of compassion, btw.
