You are absolutely right. Most of us who witness crime or even know the culprit don't dare to come in front and be the witness. This is all because of security and is threatened with his/family's life. Even the law enforcers are culprits in many crime and it is difficult to prove their guilt.

most people realize that the police are not going to be able to protect them 24-7 if they report a crime or testify against someone. due to financially strapped law enforcement agencies...law officials are under paid.. over worked... there are some crooked attorneys and judges that set defendants free..and then what.? retaliation by friends and family of the suspect is a great possibility... some bleeding heart jurors let the defendant go on a technicality or because the accused had a sad childhood and then boom back on the streets and your behind is grass. i cant think of one case where someone failed to help someone,... then was on t.v. begging for help when it happened to them. hmmmm. in any case.. people dont want to step out of their comfort zone unless they have a major stake in the situation... they just cant take the chance that it will blow up in their face.

I see it this way if you were involved in a crime you need to turn your self in. What if it was the other way around. So many familes suffer, every day of there lives, because those that witnessed it are also invovled in the crime. Your just the blame as well.

There is a general attitude that when bad things happen, the victim "caused" it to happen. People need to feel safe in their everyday lives so they hold onto this false belief. They don't want to get involved because the problem (at least to them) is the person did something to make it happen versus the world around them is unsafe. When crime happens to them, personally, they have no choice but to acknowledge that it can happen to anyone at anytime.

For the same reason that they hate the police, they hate them when they get a ticket, but love them when there stolen lawn mower gets recovered. People Don't want to get involved, it might meen going to court, it might meen having to take 10 min. of there lives to fill out a police report, and let's be honest. . . . It's not worth 10 min. to help someone else. But when it's your turn. . . . Well thats another story. It all boils down to selfishness.

You have to understand that many people are selfish. We are not saviors, we do not want any trouble especially things that do us no good. Think in their point of view, why would I want to be a witness, I might get in trouble, I have nothing to gain, I need to spend my time with the police and court, which will totally screw my schedule.

Lots of people are involved with community crime prevention. There are neighborhood watches, volunteer night sports programs, after school programs, and more.

a lot of times people wont get involved because they are afraid that if the criminal finds out they have talked to the police the criminal will come back and do something to them to get even.
