If the person is a little kid who is at the age where they should be just learning to read tell them that they will not be able to do much of anything at all in life without knowing how to read. If it's an older person who knows how to read and just doesn't say that they are missing some great stories but it isn't the worst thing in the world.

You should tell them that they are missing out on a whloe world of interesting information and enjoyment. You may not be able to convince them that it is awesome, but you may steer them toward some book that is interesting to them such as a hobby, mystery, love story, or life help(child-rearing, marriage, finance, etc.) It truly helps a person in life to have developed this love in chilhood. I started reading to my son before he was even a year old, now , I can't keep enough books in the house for him to read, and he is an honors student, and is even writing his first book at age 11! When he is reading, he is truly in another world and it is AWESOME! Keep on reading!

You could get them a book on a subject they love. Start with a thin book, not too many pages, so you won't scare them off. I suggest you look for a critically acclaimed book, one that readers also rave about. Even people who don't love to read will probably read a book about a topic that interests them. Maybe you can read the book first and say: "Hey, I just read this book and, since I know how much you love ______, I want to share it with you."

Hope it works!

Tell them to try getting books on tape. In my career I have very little time for pleasure readying because the techical information you have to know changes to much. Maybe I should have been a house painter - not too much new to learn there after a year or so! Anyhow - I really got into books on CD and tape that I could listen to on the way to work. And I enjoyed some classics and many others.

Pick a topic they like. What age group are we talking. Next tell them it is an essential skill. Reading enables all the other skills of life. All forms of learning involve reading. Do they have trouble reading or do they not know how? Challenge them to get away from the T.V. and computers and get books they are interested in and read.

AHHH! Books!
Books are portable! They go anywhere!
They do not require batteries and are not dependant on a power scource of any kind to operate. This makes them entirely bathtub safe!(all you need is a couple candles and some arome therapy fragrance )
Books are inexpensive, and comprehensive, you can purchase a book on every major and minor subject ever concieved.
Books are reusable, and one can always go back and check to see if they really said that.....as well they can be counted on to be consistant when sahared with others.
Books are long lasting, and will be around for a long time to come.Without requiring a player of any sort that will become obsolete with time.
Books are universal, every one understands how they work,so
there is little difficulty sharing them with others.
Books can be choosen without prior knowledge as they each carry a small synopsis in the flyleaf so we dont pick one we arent really interested in......................Books are there on rainy days just waiting to keep you company, and if you havent read them in a long time, you can still find your place, and carry on from there easily.
There is no need to finish a storey in haste as the words may be savoured again and again and the book will be waiting when you decide to pick it up ..
Books never jam,or blow a drive belt and have to go to the depot for expensive repairs .and their warrenty never wears out.
I am sure there are a million good reasons for books being a big part of our lives,as they educate and elucidate, amuse and entertain us,as well as lift us from our mundane lives to peek into the lives of other more interesting people.who live in other exotic and strange lands.
They teach us, and preach to us,as well as record all the speeches made to us.
Books never disolve into waveylines, and fuzzy reception or snow patterns,Their audio portion will never give out if your voice wont.
When we carry them around with us we look studious. When we have ashellf full in the living room we seem more intelligent to strangers.(our friends know better.)
The avreage book will keep the average read happy for a few days, and can be enjoyed in little pieces or gulped down in one gluttonous sitting with no harm to the reader save a mild eye strain.....
Books can be used to start a fire in an emergency,as well as eaten in like circumstances.(though i have not heard of anyone surviving long by eating them,i understand that reading them over a lifetime developes a certain flexibility of mind.which fails to crystalize in old age .
BOOKS BOOKS I LOVE EM!

Why would you waste your time doing that?

And what makes you think what's awesome for you is awesome for them?

You can say "I really enjoy reading". But past that... I believe you're being arrogant. To do more than that is to PRESUME that your way is the only way.

What about the KID who thinks Playing GUITAR is Awesome, or THROWING DARTS or hunting deer or shooting off fireworks, or driving a speed boat?

Should they try to convince YOU to stop reading and take up their personal "thang"?

I think not.

Catch a clue, bookworm.

About the 7th or 8th grade the english teacher wanted us to read a book called the Yearling and I read it. That really got me started, I REALLY enjoyed that book! Of course there are 100s of good books any one of them would have made a serious reader of me. I haven't a clue how to get someone to pick up a book. But it was my english teacher that started my love of books. I think I might have flunked that class though. I remember telling her, my teacher, how much I enjoyed that book. But I think she thought I was trying to pull something. She didn't even believe I read it.

Try to find a subject in which they are really interested. Often once they start reading, they will continue. I've seen this happen quite a bit with people who swear that they will never read anything. You just have to find the right subject.
