if the earth is a sphere with equal pressure, i would think all horizontal lines follow the pull of gravity, therefor they are curved, even short distances, but i may be wrong. using an everyday level (the one's w/ the air bubble) would in my mind follow a curve!

in small scale your horizontal line would be a straight ;line however if it is in large scale your horizontal line would bend

No, not all horizontal lines are curved. Some are, some not. If you needed a line long enough and used gravity, ie a level with a bubble, you would get a curved line. Nowdays, a large portion of lines are generated by laser levels. The level is set in one spot and a laser generates a straight lilne. This line would not be curved.

If I remember correctly....the earth's surface curves about 2 inches every mile or so....and I may have that wrong...but the point is, the line would have to be very long for it to have to curve because the diameter of the earth is so large. Most straight lines are truly straight, unless they were drawn crooked.

depends what you mean by horizontal - horizontal really means parallel to some other defined line

since in general usage we are using horizontal to mean parallel to the surface of the earth then yes, you are correct - the line will be curved

yeah...every horrizontal line is curved, but becuase the earth is a sphere, every vertical line would also be curved

Yes, I do it, but not every time and not the second I get an email back from someone who may not be as computer-savvy as me perhaps. I choose my moment, and try to make the new subject as appropriate and interesting as I can, just in case the recipient should actualy pay attention to such detail.

well, very technically, yes, and the vertical ones too, but over a short distance the curve or arc is pretty much inconsequential.

Yes, if the line is long enough for curvature to be noticeable..

It has to be. Otherwise every aircraft goes into space.

no, gravity doesn't have enough force to make a metal level bend. your theory makes sense though.
