My personal opinion is that this is the best spyware software there is . I purchased the software, 4 years ago, after trying the 30 day free version, and continue to renew every year since.

Webroot has been the industry leader in spyware/adware preventitative products, and they continually update and improve this program. When I first discovered this company years ago, I happened to just get lucky, who had heard of spyware and the like 4 years ago? I have also since purchased 3 of their other programs.

If you are a downloader, this is a must for you. Almost everything you download off the web is rife with spyware/adware. Run the free test at webroot's web site. You'll be amazed at what it finds!

As for virus software, it's all terrible. It is a necessity, but such a drain on the system. Many recommend AVG free, I hated it. Norton has become utterly useless over the past couple years, although their product used to be the best. I currently use McAfee, I suppose it's the lesser of the evils.

Don't listen to the guy that answered before me; you can get spyware and adware from anywhere now, so virus and spyware protection is essential.

Spy Sweeper is an EXCELLENT product; it not only detects and cleans past installations of spyware and adware, but protects you from new installations by prompting you whether to give something permission to install or not. That being said, don't rely on it exclusively, as it won't catch everything. For full coverage, get AdAware and SpyBot Search & Destroy as well. Both are free and don't need to run in the background. Using the combination of these 3 will pick up virtually every known piece of spyware and adware. Unfortunately, Spy Sweeper has a fee to continue using, but it's worth it in my opinion.

As far as antivirus goes, AVG is a great product and should be all you need.

Another recommendation I have is to visit a website:

http://www.grc.com

It looks very amateur-ish when you first start using it, but its tools and online scans are VERY helpful. It also provides free programs which make it easy to detect and fix specific problems which other utility software just doesn't deal with.

I've never used any anti-spy or anti-virus. Anti-spy and anti-virus just get in the way. The best way to keep from getting viruses and spy-ware is not to go to untrusted web pages, that means no porn, game cheat sites, and many personally created web pages. From personal experience anti-spy and anti-virus programs just slow the operation of the computer. If your still worried about getting something i would suggest visiting symantec.com and just do a scan for known nasties and it will tell you how to delete them or they will have small programs that uninstall the problem.

it is a fantastic product......... it's on my machine. wouldn't have it any other way. most effective antispyware on the market. I've tried most of them, this one is top shelf! i urge you to read pc worlds review. it's consistently rated as a top shelf tool. do yourself a favor and get it now the ad aware stuff you're getting is just cookies. as you use spy sweeper look under options.........always remove and check all the cookies it shows unless you want it. ad aware is a little aggressive side with cookies. cookies aren't all bad. if you like purge your cookies often, or keep certain ones you want. ad aware is an OK product, but no match for spy sweeper.
