Actually, that would be about right and agrees with the profiling we did on hackers many years ago. At 14 to 23 years old, people (mostly males, but a few females) have the right mindset and mental maturity to attack the logical problems associated with hacking, as well as the time to do it. At that age, there is also a lack of understanding of consequence.

Basically, this group has the basics of the knowledge, a lot of time on their hands, and is generally connected with enough like minded souls to acquire and network the necessary knowlege quickly. They are basically exploring a whole new world that they can suddenly understand.

Hacking is the pursuit of the pure joy of learning about computers and their logic. There are two sides to it. There are those who just want to learn how to make the computer realy sing, and those who would like to use the computer to disrupt others. The latter are sometimes called crackers. Hacking used to be a very good word.

As hackers get older, their brain matures further to understand consequences. Lateral logic ability probably decreases. It also matures to accomodate more social interaction, and requires it. At some point in the game girls start to look quite a bit more attractive than the computer screen, and the increasing levels of responsibility take up the spare time.

Older hackers (crackers) tend to be more purposeful, and may attack specific locations with a specific goal in mind. A few are employed in the cyberterrorism efforts, for or against.

Now, if you are looking at the crackers, there are a few observations.
Younger hackers (crackers) are often looking for something lighter, such as pictures, games, or occasionally to achieve recognition. Wise system managers used to have clearly named directories of games so that if a young hacker broke into the system they would be delayed by the games directory.

A few folks who call themselves hackers are looking for exploits in the operating system and programs. These aren't necessarily bad folks. Often they will write a proof of concept "virus" to take advantage of it. These are often sent to the OS vendor as well as to antivirus companies well before being released into the wild. Sometimes, it just takes notifying the OS vendor to get the job done. It's a mark of distinction to have people have to deal with you and to have your virus (or other accomplishment) recognized. You might think of it as a form of cybertagging. If you talk to some older computer types, they may proudly tell you that an OS or program was changed based upon errors or oversights that they found.

Sorry about the rambling. There is a lot to hacking, haquing, cracking, kludging, etc.

My friend knows a guy that at 11 was hacking into government stuff. They had to go to his house and scare the heck out of him, since they couldn't do much else seeing that he was a minor.

Hmm that sounds like the same age for everything from drinking and driving, and other problems. That's not fair, just because we are teens.

i think that sounds about accurate.

and its probably because they have the most tiem, and are most likely to do it just for a fun thing. which is way more motivating than any boring job related task.
