On the start menu, go to "Run" and type in "msconfig" (without quotes). There will be a tab that lets you change either type of startup programs.

Go to Start, Run and type msconfig OK

The System Configuration Utility box opens

Click on the Startup tab

Uncheck programs that you don't want to load when you boot up.

These are the ones you actually need :
Scan Registry
Task Monitor
System Tray
Load Power Profile (this will be listed and checked twice. Leave both checked).
Your Antivirus program
Your Firewall

Do NOT disable any that you don't recognize. You may have some of the programs checked that you use regularly, and they can be found in Program Files folder in Windows Explorer.

You can find a list of startup items and what they do here:

http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php Scroll down past the numbers and you can search alphabetically.

Hi, In your start menu go to run! Type in msconfig... A broswer will open and at the top very right, click on startup, All of your programs that startup when your computes does will be checked. Uncheck all of them and your computer will be much much faster. This browser will pop up everytime you restart your computer but it will run so much faster. Hopefully this helps

1. Run a complete Virus scan of your PC
2. Run a complete Spyware scan with Adaware, then Spybot, the Yahoo Anti-spy (all free).
3. After everything is cleaned off. Start|Run|MSCONFIG|OK
Go through the 'Startup' tab and uncheck items you do not want to run at startup. You might have to search via Yahoo search to find out what the cryptic filenames are and if they can be safely unchecked.

Right click on your task bar Properties. You should be able to customize what starts when your puter does. That's how mine works anyway.
