I am no expert on the subject, but I am currently writing a screenplay. I had the same question before I started, but I refused to take the time to answer it. I finally decided to just write a screenplay without doing any research because I am always picturing movies to myself in my head anyway. My suggestion is to describe everything exactly as you want it to appear in the movie. Just freestyle it according to your vision. I think few details are too small. Just picture the scene in your head, and write down what you see. I hope you find this helpful.
Good luck!

There is a FREE site that can help you put things in the proper format - and you don't have to know too much about the whole process. It is called ScriptBuddy. One of the only drawbacks is the fact it is web-based. But if you play around with it, you can get a general idea what the format looks like.
It is not a very detailed reply, I know...but a start.

I write so many screenplays although there not into publishing yet. All you need to do is set up an introduction in parentheses, then you write the characters' names and their lines, according to order. Make sure you put their expressions and emotions in parentheses in their lines, and divide the play into scenes by the setting. Settings are scenes. Don't forget to put when the curtain should rise and fall!

You can download free movie scripts at www.dailyscript.com, and study the formating. Just be aware that a spec script is different than a shooting script. Your spec script should have no camera angles or directions, no numbered scenes, etc.
Also, you can find books at the library on screenwriting.
Good luck!

Whatever method you decide the best strategy is to know your ending before you begin your draft.
