they spent $25 for room $2 for tip = $27, each man spent $9 for the room or $27.
The problem is you add the $2 tip again and expect to get $30 which is wrong. Remember each man took $1 so you add $3 to get $30. No missing money

There is no missing $1 since, if they pay $30 ($10 each) and $5 is returned to them, and they gave $2 to the boy, they spent a total of $27 ($30 - $5 = $25 room bill, tip = $2) and money returned to them was $3. So, $27 + $3 = $30.

This is an old puzzle that is based on mis-direction.
The question ask is deliberately meaningless.
Each man Has spent $9. That is $27. That $27 INCLUDED the tip for the houseboy. What happened was, the men spent $27. The houseboy got $2 of it, and the manager got the other $25.
There is no $30 anymore. We started with $30 but the men got $3 back. They have it in their wallets.
This is a classic type of puzzle and if worded correctly can be perplexing.
The problem convinces you to add the $2 to the $27 instead of subtract it.
neat huh?

You're counting the $2 twice. $30-3=$27 or $9 each. That's how much it cost them, $25+$2. There is no missing $1.

actually this is an error in perception .
we had $30 = $25 to manager + $ 3 to the friends +$2 to the bell boy .
BASICALLY THE $ 27 INCLUDES THE $2 GIVEN TO THE BELL BOY .
they paid 25 to the manager 2 to the bell boy and have 3 left .
25+2+3 = 30

This has been asked before. Anyway, the main thing is in your questions. You are frasing it wrong and the doller disappears.
$27 is spent including the $2 which the boy took. And they eacg got $1 back.
That makes it $27 + $3 = $30
No missing $1. Are you giving 10 pts ?

you people going about it the wrong way. do it with actual singles. the guys give 30....but they get 5 dollars back....so as a group, they spent 25 dollars....give two away....and only return 3 to the group....i.e. 25 + 3 = 28....+ the 2 given away...30
do it this way: get 30 of something, take out 5....of that 5, take out 2...then return the 3 to the pile....then, evenly distribute it into 3 piles...you'll find that each pile gets 9....and there is one extra left in your hand...and the other 2 are separate.

There is no extra dollar! You're twisting the numbers. Here's how I see it.
First there's the initial 30 dollars.
When they find out that it's only 25 dollars you divide the 25 by 3. That's $8.33 per person that they should have paid. Each person get's an additional dollar, making the per person total $9.33. That $9.33 times 3 people is about 28 dollars, then with the two dollars tip that's thirty dollars!

This is one of those trick questions.
if you just take $5 out of the $30 dollars an give $3 of the five to the friend s and keep $2 then it adds up.
