5(x+3)-3x=2(x+8)
5x+15-3x=2x+16
0=1

equation has no solution

if you plot y=5(x+3)-3x and 2(x+8) you will see that two lines are parallel, i.e. they never cross, so no solution.

5(x + 3) - 3x = 2(x + 8)

Remember, multiplication distributes over addition, so
5 · x + 5 · 3 - 3x = 2 · x + 2 · 8

Simplify the multiplications first
5x + 15 - 3x = 2x + 16

Use the commutative property of addition:
5x - 3x + 15 = 2x + 16

Combine 5x - 3x = 2x
(5x - 3x) + 15 = 2x + 16
2x + 15 = 2x + 16

Transpose 2x from the right to the left and 15 from the left to the right
2x - 2x = 16 - 15

Combine the terms
0 = 1

Since you know that 0 = 1 is a false statement, you can conclude that there is no possible solution to your equation. That's all!

5(x+3) -3x= 2(x+8)
5x+15-3x=2x+16
2x+15=2x+16
15=16 (which is not possible)
therefore above equation is not consistent.

2006-06-26 00:23:54 · answer #3 · answered by flori 4 · 0 0

5(x + 3) - 3x = 2(x + 8)
5x + 15 - 3x = 2x + 16
2x + 15 = 2x + 16
0x = 1
x = (1/0)

This problem is unsolvable.

5(x+3)-3x=2(x+8)

5x +5*3 -3x =2x +2*8

5x+15-3x=2x+16

5x-3x-2x=16-15

0x=1

x=0

Use distributive property. (you basically multiply the outside number by the two insides.)
5(x+3)
5x+15-3x
2x+15 is your anwer not 2x+8 someone or your mathbook incorrectly answered the problem.
