Those are to keep out 'bots' from websites that might want to mass produce profiles or email addresses... This way if they (the websites) want to mass produce profiles or email addresses they have to complete them in person.

Umm... have you ever actually read the stuff by the verification codes? It says right by them that they're for security purposes and so they know its not just a computer trying to get into it. If you have a question for that stuff just read it. It’ll answer the question for you.

Oh and by the way, the word “what” is spelled with an “H”

It's to prevent computer programs from automatically signing up. It's a security feature.
