I am putting together a library, a collection of books that I would want my children to read... classics that would help them learn, and dream and aspire to be better than their father. I'm a fairly religious man, so I would want the books to be uplifting and void of any filth or suggestive scenes and books that avoid vulgarities. Some of the books I have already added are "A Tale of Two Cities," "The Once And Future King" "A Wizard of Earthsea" "A Horse and His Boy" "Early Man and the Ocean" "Where the Red Fern Grows" and "The Alchemist"

CS Lewis's Chronicles of Narnia series

Maya Angelou's "I know why the caged bird sings"

Mark Twain's Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer

You might also want to get some poetry books, like the classics or America's Most Loved Poems.
And some short story anthologies - get a mix of authors in one book.

Chicken Soup for the Soul

Catherine Marshall's "Christy" and "Julia"

Also don't forget to include some biographies of people that are awe inspiring that you totally respect yourself or stories of everyday people that have accomplished wonderful things.

Here are some books I've read with my 5th graders

"Bud Not Buddy" by Christopher Paul Curtis - Story of an African-american boy during the depression who is looking for his father - very uplifting story about the human spirit

"When Zachary Beaver Came To Town" - great story about friendship, family, and acceptance with a great ending

Hope you try these titles!

All of the books that have been listed are great.
I would recommend two books that could go along with all of those books and are a great resource for parents and educators. The author is Jim Trelease and the books are:
Hey! Listen to this: Stories to Read Aloud
&
The Read Aloud Handbook

DON'T take out anything by C.S.Lewis. If you are religious you will get the symbolism to Christianity. My son and I read all 7 books when he was about 10 or 11 and thoroughly enjoyed them. I have never heard him described as a racist before! I don't remember seeing anything remotely racist.
How about: The Secret Garden
The Cay and Timothy of the Cay

Pride and Prejudice
Sense and Sensibilities
The Little Women
Wurthering Heights
Great Expectations
The Adventures of Tom Sawyer

Black Beauty

Actually, there's a long list I have on top of my head but I just cannot remember some of them now. I will just add them on when I remember them already. :)

I am a middle school teacher and my students love _The Watsons Go To Birmingham-1961 by Christopher Paul Curtis. Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn - as suggested in prior posts may have elements of prejudice in them.
