1) Count all integers
123 has 3 sig figs

2) 0 only counts as a sig fig if it is NOT a place holder
120 has 2 sig figs
102 has 3 sig figs
.00012 has 2 sig figs
12.0 has 3 sig figs
12.01 has 4 sig figs
Try putting it into scientific notation if you are confused

3) If you are adding and subtacting, then the sig figs stop at the last place holder of the number of number with the shortest
12.3 + 1200 = 1200
12.34 + 1.3456= 13.69

4) If you are multiplying or dividing, the answer will have the same number sig figs as the number with the least amount of sig figs
2.1*2=4
2.1*20=40
2.1*2.0=4.2

there is a simple funda that i found out myself .
the funda is - remove the decimal point and then write down the number as it is after removing the decimal count the number of figures that make sense . that gives you the number of significant figures.
TAKE MY WORD BEFORE I FOUND THIS OUT I COULD NEVER GET THESE RIGHT .
NOW I NEVER GET THESE WRONG !!!!
examples -
1)0002.44454432000
it becomes
00244454432000
remove senseless digits it becomes
24454432000
no. of significant figures = 11

2) 0.2224240033
it becomes
02224240033
remove senseless digits
2224240033
no. of significant digits = 10
