I´m a ferret person :)
I have 3 ferrets, and right now im taking care of a ferret that i´ve rescued (an abused albino hob) that needs gaining weight and mobility before I send him to his new forever home.
ferrets can make the perfect pet for the right people, but there´s many things to thing about before getting one....
Ferrets are high mantainance pets, they require lots of "equipment" (big cage, accesories, toys...) and most of all vet costs, ferrets require vaccinations (distemper and rabies); and a medical problem might unexpectedly come up any time, so you should have money saved.(and believe me, as a ferret owner I can tell you they do come up!)
It´s really important to do all your research, find a veterinarian and supplies and ferret-proof you home/rooms where ferret will be allowed before getting the ferret.
I recommend you purchasing the "Ferrets for Dummies" book, written by Kim Schilling, that book is a must have for any future ferret owner.
You can find it in many petstores/bookstores, if not you have it online in places like amazon or barnes and noble.
I higly recommend going to ferret shelters, specially for first time owners, they usually have ferrets of all sizes/colors and ages! The shelter parents will be able to assist you with any questions in general ferret care question or particular questions on the ferret(s) you adopt from them.
When you get a ferret from a shelter you usually have them neutered, vaccinated and litter box trained, plus they´ll tell you about his/her personality (if ferret is calm or hyper, if he/she likes other ferrets or other animals likes cats/dogs...)
Its also very very important to choose a BIG cage, it´s really necessary, a ferret cage should have (if its for only 1 ferret) at least 2 full levels, and no less that 30x20x35 you have to think of all the thing you have to add to the cage, litter box, ferrets usually dont like the small triangular ones, they preffer the square ones or cat-sized litter boxes, but they take up plenty of spece, attachable bowls for water/food, hammocks, sacks, blankets, toys....
Ferrets need a MINIMUM of 3 hours out of the cage every day, but I always recommend at least 5.They are active animals and love playing and interacting with their humans.
Ferret-proofing a house/room is a challenge, ferrets cat get into many things, and some rooms might be impossible to ferret proof; ferrets can climb so not only floor level must be ferret-proofed.
This is a website I made tht might help, contains answers to basic questions and many links to informational sites:

Ferrets make wonderful pets. They are very intelligent and playful, and can be taught a number of tricks. You can even teach them to use a litter box. Some training may be required as some young ferrets tend to nip during play. This must be stopped when they are young to prevent biting from becoming a bad habit. Plenty of interaction with your ferret and using Bitter Apple spray (from any pet store) on your hands and feet will discourage your ferret from biting. For more information on ferrets you can visit marshallpet.com. Marshall Pets is the largest and best known ferret breeder in the world. Hope this information helps......
