It is most gratifying to read such an eloquent discourse and I whole heartedly agree with the thrust of your most erudite question. The thing is, bless'em they're a bit brain washed you know and believe that there is a worldwide conspiracy against them. Paranoia indeed! The extreme right wing proclivities of this nation are a great concern to me and it is causing the polarising, divisive and skewed nature of US politics today. Of course, the really worrying trend, is that those that are hurt most by this type of hysterical, disabling, right wing thinking are the ones that rush to it's defence when it's under threat! Presumably out of some misguided sense of loyalty or patriotism. No, I'm afraid you're right, America needs to learn to play nicely and have a bit of humility. Terrorism is in large part a result of this rigid, militaristic, right wing foreign policy she has dished out over the last 5 or 6 decades and I can't see it stopping anytime soon. Jules, lecturer. I wouldn't put this on the right wing of America, although some are paranoid. However, this is not an easy issue. I have family that waited 12 years to come to America the legal way. They are very insulted by the calls of amnesty for illegal immigrants. Why are they so special that they get a free pass? I have heard non-Americans say even worse things that I do not care to repeat. This issue is a huge problem in some parts of the US. Especially since health care and welfare is almost handed to illegals and tax payers have to flip the bill. I know in CA, an illegal immigrant can get a ID card and drivers license with ease.
We do have ourselves to blame though, this problem has been ignored for too long and has no easy solution. I'll tell you this, I pay taxes and am a business owner. I currently employ 50 employees and am always looking for ways to create new jobs. If me and an illegal immigrant crossed the street together and got hit by the same car, he would get aid from the state and I would be asked for a medical insurance card. He would get medical treatment for free and I might be in debt the rest of my life.
Fair?
And I LOVE being an American. We live in the greatest nation in the world and have every opprtunity better ourselves. I'm living proof.

No Billy, we're not all so bad. We have the same amount of Mexicans we had last year, it's just the Issue of The Week, designed to work up the undecided masses in a congressional election year. Just like Gay Marriage, once the election passes it will miraculously go away. Many, if not most, of us are pretty everyday people, without scary pseudo-fascist opinions. The really opinionated ones tend to be more vocal is all. It's probably the same where you live. The crazies scream the loudest.

I am an American citizen and I love and cherish my land... I pay taxes on a weekly basis, a registered voter.. I have worked 2 jobs all my life ... (20 years now) I recently needed some help from the state with medical bills... (I am a mother of 2 wonderfull boys)
I was turned down.. because I am American... Not Mexican or African... The government is wrong in what they are doing... I blame the government for making such laws...

I'm quite sure the answer depends on exactly what cultural values you mean by "Americans" and on the perspective of the person answering the question.
I personally love being an American. I can see why the rest of the world might not be too crazy about me being one though.

Fetid Billy Just remember that we are a nation of immigrants, unless you are a direct decendent of some indian tribe, and at one time or the other all of us were immigrants. The trouble is, most of us forgot. But it should tell you, there is hope!!
