She is a comic foil in much the same way that Neville Longbottom is.

She serves a purpose in progressing the story in many ways. She becomes a member of Harry's secret Defense Against the Dark Arts class. She is someone who is picked on by the Slytherin types -- so the fact that Harry, the Weasley kids and Hermione befriend her shows what good pepole they are. Her father publishes the Witch's version of the tabloid papers -- which comes into play because The Prophet is under ministry control & doesn't publish the trutn about Voldemort being back.

She also has a crush on Ron which is fun.

Luna has become even more important in Book 6. She has a peculiar, but fairly accurate insight to people's natures. I expet she will play a major part in #7 too, although I'm not quite sure where.

I believe she will prove to be quite important. In Book 5, she and Hermione cornered Rita Skeeter to give an exclusive interview in Rita's father's paper ad opposed to the Daily Prophet.

Luna has a different way of looking at life and people. I think her insight will play and important part in the final book.
