If anyone could do what they wanted anytime they wanted without any form of reprisal, that would mean that there would be no controls over populations of people ie no law, no wrong or right. Therefore there would probably be very little progress, a lot of chaos and much confusion over many things. Animals have free will look at them as an example of why free will could be seen as over rated.

I think the easiest way of explaining this is by using an example from the matrix. In the scene where Cypher has dinner with the Agent he says that he would rather live in a world where he has no choice in what goes on but lives well and is burden free than to live in reality where he is on cold dark ship eating paste. The reason why a lot of philosophers would say that free will is overrated is that with free will comes responsibilty. If you were too look at children, they have next to no responsibility and yet they are much more susceptible to happiness than adults. In short ignorance is Bliss.

Well, even if we were to have free will, which is doubtful, what would it mean? Most people, if given the opportunity to act freely will quickly join a group which takes away their freedom. True freedom leaves the individual feeling isolated and without purpose, and so they subject their freedom to another. So assuming that even if we were to have freedom of will, most of us would give it up in exchange for a socially defined "meaning."

I think there really is no free will. I think our genetics is like a computer program that plays itself out with the illusion that we are making decisions. Yes, you can choose to do what you feel is the right thing to do in any given situation, but do you think that you can choose what you feel is right?

Alot of people think that they're making their own decision themselves, but social scientific work has been done in this area
A vast majority of people are 'sheep' and have a go-along-to-get-along attitude, - and do what others THINK should be done.

Maybe they don't enjoy having it. Maybe it's an illusion caused by the unpredictability of a deterministic chaos. If so, it's one I like.

Because they may feel it will lead to conviction of themselves. They will be held accountable for their own actions to someone greater then themselves
