It means reluctant to draw attention to yourself, but not necessarily critical of yourself. Self-effacing is more like modest, not critical.

It means to bring yourself down. And it doesn't always mean it's a bad thing. You can be Self-effacing to be humble or modest. Bring yoursefl downa few pegs or talk bad about something you did great on. Or it can be used in a bad way when you really dissapprove of yourself. Say if you're obese and you drive yourself to depression by calling yourself a "Lardass" That's a self-effacing comment.

It means that big old Obama will tax all of the hard working rich people so I can remain sitting on my butt doing nothing but smoking pot all day! Joking, of course. But essentially thats what's happening Self reliance is, as it sounds, self reliance. You work by yourself (aka, controlled by yourself), the government does not help you (or "runs you"), or helps you very little. Just because you bought some materials doesn't mean you're not self reliant. After all, you DID the action of buying the car and the materials, its not like the government gave you the car or materials. Thus, you are self reliant if you do things by yourself. You don't need to make everything by yourself, you just need to be able to function by yourself.
