I have no idea what the "right" answer is, but I think someone can work really hard and not be very efficient. Smart work is also making an attempt to be efficient. You can work hard and get a lot of things done at a job, but if you didn't prioritize you may leave with some of the most important jobs not yet accomplished. You worked hard, but you didn't work smart.
Hope that makes sense. :)

Smart work: working efficiently, by doing only what is necessary to get the job done.
hard work: can be good, but also unnecessary. Working too hard on something which can be done in a short amount of time, is not working efficiently, therefore sometimes not a good choice!

Hard work is jumping in and slogging away. For instance, getting a shovel and digging a ditch. Smart work is analysing the situation and figuring out the most effective and efficient way to complete a task. For instance, putting the shovel down and picking up the phone book and renting a backhoe.

Working hard, implies lots of effort.. working smart denotes looking at the problem, accurately assessing what needs to be done and using your intelligence to eliminate or reduce the problem..its better to work smart than to work hard.. Abe Lincoln once said something to the effect of " if you give me 6 hours to chop down a tree, I will spend 4 hours sharpening the axe"... its that k ind of thing..

Smart work involves taking the time to figure out how to complete the project with the most efficiency but still with quality results.

i imagine anybody is only confusing pressed to look on the real themes the following. between the most important alterations is that Hillary Clinton has a lot extra political and global experience than Obama to boot as a plan for a way she would implement the courses she speaks about. surely, Obama does no longer look to have any type of plan for all the "alterations" he needs to make and he hasn't precisely suggested what those alterations would also be. that's the real enormous difference between those 2 applicants.

Tell him they're not mutually exclusive. If it's easy, you're not challenging yourself enough, and if you're not working smart, why bother?
Tell him a better question would be, "who's the person who decided working smarter meant work was no longer challenging?" If it's easy, it's not work.
Throwing it back at your interviewer will show you're not dodging the question and are able to analyze and interpret on a high level, and that you're mature enough to formulate your own thoughts.
