It could possibly be sciatica, which is pain caused by pressure of irritation of the sciatic nerve.
Characteristically, the pain starts anywhere from the buttocks down the rear of the thigh, or along the outer side of the lower leg to the top of the foot. This is sometimes accompanied with back pain, although not necessarily.
I myself have experienced shooting pains down my leg. Since mine wasn't excruciatingly painful, and would come and go, mine was a mild case. I talked to my yoga teacher and osteopath and they said that it would go away-- and it did after a week or so.
If your pain seems to be unbearable, especially accompanied by back pain, I suggest you seek advice from a professional such as an osteopath or a yoga teacher who can teach you poses to relieve the pain.
Good luck!

Hi- I live with CHRONIC knee pain due to a severe injury over 20 years ago. What I do to help ease the pain is utilize a GOOD Knee Immobilizer @ times I am working. You can purchase one of these @ most any Pharmacy- even Walmart, and it is an excellent investment. Make sure the immoblizer is one with an inset on both sides of the knee. In addition, buy a product that has a circular site for ur knee itself. When @ rest, elevate this knee, and use ice for ur aching knee. If you don't have an ice bag, frozen veggies are an excellent makeshift icebag. Taking up to 800 mg of ibuprophen every 6 hours helps, also, as it is an anti-inflammatory medication. In my case, I finally had to go to a Pain Management Clinic, where I receive Injections that are long acting agents to help with my chronic pain. There are days it is darned near impossible to get up in the morning due to this danged knee. Again, this was a result of a 20 year injury I sustained. You may want to ask around, too, for a proper shoe to wear, which may aide in the way you have to stand during work hours. In any case, this should help you with the leg pain, also. I hope this helped somehow. Good Luck and Take Care! PS- You may need to see a Physician about the Spine Alignment, as this can mess up ur entire system!

My grandmother had the same problem. She ate around 2-3 bananas a day for more potassium. Loss of potassium will cause your legs to do that. You can also get a liquid called hunts peppermint oil.
