That is sweet, but I suggest 2 parties. One when he gets in that consists of you alone(I am sure his missed a lot about being with you that he took for granted, it's probably mutual though, right?) and a second one with your friends and his friend, and family..

I'd check with his unit or the army staff here about how other soldiers have done when they returned. I'll bet they have some suggestions. I sure hope they do!!!

But if it was me, I'd wait a few days or a week or so before the party. He's coming from an incredibly stressful situation into something completely different. He'll need some time to decompress, to adjust to life at home. Let him just look around, and soak up the "homeness" of being back. Do simple things first - a trip to the park with just the immediate family, or a picnic, or a ball game. Heck, even a trip to the grocery store would be a treat to him, especially if it's "Free Samples" day.

My guess is that he's been dreaming of just being home for a long time. Then, after he's had a little time to adjust, have some close friends over, but still not a crowd.

Oh, and give a lot of thought to letting him know what you're doing first. Remember, for the last year or so, for him, surprises have not been a good thing.

That is so sweet, i'm sure he will love whatever you do. You should have all of his favorite foods, drinks, & snacks. You should have all of your friends and family get involved to help you with the planning and the decorations. You should give him a special gift, also. There is a website called orientaltrading.com, they have everything you could ever need for a party. They have a lot of patriotic decorations and personalized party favors. And they have really low prices.

I would save the first 34 hours for just the 2 of you. Then plan a dinner out and have a huge surprise party waiting for him. And thank him for me and mine for his services. Don't forget.

Dont surprise him with loud noises. Since the government has trained him to be a heartless killer, he could instinctively slap you around and break your neck in 3 seconds.
