They herd cows to keep them together...they move them for a variety of reasons but the 1 i'm most familiar w/ is to move them to a diff pasture/field so the grass can grow back up in that one and the other can be 'trimmed' down. There are usually quite a few field changes, especially in the non winter months

There's a lot of reasons for moving cattle.
Moving from one pasture to another. Weaning calves from mamas. moving the cows to a different pasture from the bull. Treating them, vaccination, worming them. If they're sick they need medicine.
These are just a few reasons of many. They can also be herded when they get out and aren't where they're supposed to be.

Farmers herd cows into the barn for milking. They also move them into different fields for grazing.

Not too much reason to do that nowadays, at least in North America, what with hay storage, feeds, silage, automated watering systems, etc. But three good reasons to move them historically were:
Move to food sources
Move to water sources (often found together with grass)
Move them to a town with a rail line to get them to market. Like up the Chisholm trail, for instance.

herding cows is mainly for ranch work if you're working with angus beef cows and such. it could be branding, moving them to higher ground after floods, giving them better grazing, vaccines, and stuff like that. They may also be shipped for things.

Sounds to me like Jan, Katy and horsegal have all been around it a bunch. I would add one more to theirs. My brother takes in pairs for the summer. We have to move (herd) them from the house where the loading chutes are to their pasture for the summer then gather them in the fall to send them home.
