I know how you feel. My one and only pregnancy so far, I asked my gyno, " what if I dont know if I am having them?" And not just him, but EVERYBODY else said, you will know it.
Well, just like a bad dream kind of.... I didnt know I was starting labor when I did. All that hurt was my back, just like a really bad backache, I had been feeling it for weeks, so it wasnt new to me.
The only thing, and I mean ONLY thing that tipped me off that this back pain may be different was that I was spotting pink. Not red or nothing, like cotton candy pink, lol. I mean my husband even took his time getting ready to go to the hospital.
He clipped his nails, took a shower. I ate a corn dog even, cause to me, it didnt feel like I was in labor at all.
4 hours I spent at home before we had left. I didnt call my dr. either. My husband was even making comments like, "are you sure you should go to the hospital, I dont think your in enough pain for it to be labor." lol
But, when I got there and was checked, I was at 6 already and my water broke just then too. It was 6 days before my due date.
And if your trying to speed things up, walks, spicy food, all that didnt work for me.
Not to be gross or nothing, but an orgasim jump started the contractions. And Im sure you can kind of put together why that one works.
Good luck, it is so gonna be worth it :)

What you describe are called braxton hix contractions. They usually don't hurt, they just make your abdomen feel tighter for a short period of time. Some women have them quite frequently leading up to true labor. With my last child I had them about every 3 minutes all day long. I had a prenatal check that day and the dr. said not yet, but my water broke that night and labor was very quick. Hope you are as lucky!

I had a leak of water or I wouldn't have known that I was having contractions. I never ever felt a thing. When I got to the hospital and they put the thing on my stomach to monitor contractions I was having them, but never felt I guess I was lucky. I don't know why I didn't feel them though. I do have a high pain tolerance.

The difference between braxton and real is that braxton only tighten at the top of Uterus. If they are real, the whole thing will be hard. I'm talking hard as a rock. Pain isn't always a good indication. I was having contractions for hours with my 3rd child and didn't know it.

The braxton-hicks contractions are generally not painful. Some people notice some discomfort, others feel the tightening, but have no discomfort, and still others feel nothing at all. Totally normal. Don't worry. And good luck!!

I didn't feel ant contraction with my third kid, but I was in labor all day. My water had broken, so i was hooked up to the machine. I didn't feel anything until about twenty minutes before he was born.
I don't have high pain tolerance, like some people...I just didn't feel any pain at all.
