I was talking with co-workers the other day and realized this about myself.
Example #1: I, along with one of my coworkers, will drive well out of our way to save a few pennies on gas. (Not at all uncommon to drive 15-20 miles to save a nickle per gallon.)
Example #2: I periodically suffer from severe lower back pain. Only Valium or Aleve help. Had the diazepam but not the naproxen sodium. Knew it was on sale at Giant all week but waited for the coupon inserts in the Sunday paper to see if there was one. There was, for $1.00 off. Rather than go straight to Giant, however, I checked Super Fresh (A&P in some regions) because they double coupons up to a dollar. Not on sale there. Finally went to Giant, got me some Aleve and got me some relief, after suffering for several days!
Example #3: Back in the '60s & '70s, before I started driving, I would take a bus all the way downtown to save .50 or less on a record album that I could have found closer to home. Bus fare exceed saving by 3X!

I think that it's more important to me to feel like I'm getting a good deal. Gas prices don't bother me so much, it's the thought that this station might be charging me more than they should. So I don't feel bad driving across town to save a few cents on the dollar. Here's the real kicker: a couple weeks ago, I decided to start pumping mid-grade gas into my car because it runs better. So I'm spending more, but choosing where to spend.

No -- I'm all for the coupons and driving a little farther to buy the week'c groceries ina place where they double your coupons, but when you are spending more to save a little then you have to realize you will not end up ahead in the long run

in the example of the backpain, you could have also lost productivity and opptys by sitting around suffering thoe three days -- in essence your frugality cost you 3 days of you in a prime age -- how much will that be wort to you when you are 80 yrs old!

My brother is that frugal. We went on vacation in Florida. On the way home, the cheapskate decided we did not need take the Turnpike home. There was a road that ran parallel to it and we could save $9.

What happened was this: We had to stop every 30 minutes and wash the car because there were too many bugs on the windshield. It costs $30 for every time we washed the car. It took us 10 extra hours so we had to buy extra gas and food. We stayed an extra night in a hotel. In all, it costs us over $200 to save that $9 toll.

By the ex.s that you gave.I don't think that you are frugal,or thrifty at all.It looks more like you are trying to justify"the expense"by saying that you "saved money"when in fact, you actually spent more. The ex. that really bothers me is the one that you went several days in pain waiting on a coupon. I don't know you,but I bet you are worth more than a dollar. Bless You

You are a female Human, you are gathering. It's in your blood line, But you do have free will and money is a new concept compared to barter. If you can afford to shop for the so called good deal do it. It's the fun time of being on a quest. Just be a good Stewart of your cash and your medical/social needs.

Those aren't saving, they are time wasting excersises. You spend the savings on gas through using more gas. You make your condition worse by not treating it, leading to increased costs for treatment down the line. You admit you didn't save anything on the records.

Why not save money by shopping on the web?

I knew someone who would reuse disposable diapers if they only had urine in them. Of course the diapers had to be set out to dry in order for this to work--gross!

Please read about Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder:
"While Obsessive-Compulsive personality disorder (OCDP) sounds similar in name to obsessive-compulsive anxiety disorder, the two are markedly different disorders. People with obsessive-compulsive personality disorder are overly focused on orderliness and perfection. Their need to do everything "right" often interferes with their productivity. They tend to get caught up in the details and miss the bigger picture. They set unreasonably high standards for themselves and others, and tend to be very critical of others when they do not live up to these high standards. They avoid working in teams, believing others to be too careless or incompetent. They avoid making decisions because they fear making mistakes and are rarely generous with their time or money. They often have difficulty expressing emotion."

Peace to you.

You're not my creepy uncle in disguise, are you? He once ran out of gas driving by several stations because he knew of one that was 2cents cheaper than the others.
