You have what your doctor would call menorrhagia - excessive menstruation or vaginal bleeding. The causes are varied. It could be due to fibroids(more common in blacks), endometriosis(the lining of the uterus is called the endometrium), infection, miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, rarely endometrial cancer and a host of other reasons eg. if you have a bleeding disorder.
Your doctor needs to examine you and would also probably organize an ultrasound scan to check everything is OK. You may also need blood tests to be sure you are not anaemic.
See the doctor as early as possible. The good news is sometimes no disease process is found and you are simply given medication to reduce the bleeding!

I went through that last month. I skipped 2 periods, then the next time I had it was for 2 weeks, stopped for about 2 days, then started again. I just had another period last week & today started having cramps again. Mine are really heavy now, like i need to get up in the middle of the night to change & once more early in the morning. It's gross, and uncomfortable, and makes me lose sleep.
I am 35, and I am sadly just beginning the perimenopausal stages.
My recommendation is to go to the gyno. Even if you're like me & starting menopause, you need to make sure.
They also gave me a pregnancy test, but I knew that wouldn't be the problem as my guy has been fixed for almost 20 years.
Feel free to contact me with any further questions or comments. I know it can be embarresing to discuss this on this site, so don't worry about emailing me.
Good luck, and I hope it all turns out to be nothing major...which could be STRESS! It's a real killer to your body in more ways than you know!

There are alot of reasons why this has happened but you did not
state your age, or if you have had any irregular periods before or
if you were on birth control and got off. I used to have very heavy
flows . I have polycystic ovarian syndrome and hormonal fluxes.
Your problem could be very serious or it could be nothing serious.
your best bet is to see a doctor and tell him all of the facts. He will
run some tests and see what is happening. I have my fingers
crossed and hope it is something with a simple remedy.good luck

oh my that is not good at all since you are going to the dr soon i would go out and get a good multi vitamin to take in the mean time and if you can eat a rare steak
there are a lot of things that could be causing this but only your dr can figure out which it is for you but most often it is a hormonal irregularity which makes sense since you missed two periods
if it is any heavier of a flow than a period or it suddenly gets heavier then maybe you should go to the er

OMG go to ur doctor right away... unless u had an abortion then this is not normal. Even for an abortion u bleed only one time. Your uterus and whatnot may be internally bleeding slowly... it happened to my friend and she didnt pay attention and she had to stay in the hospital for like 3 weeks and shes still on medication.. This isnt your period btw. its more like first your period then something that wasnt supposed to come out of your body comes out with the lining of your uterus... It can also be a damaged fallopian tube. hope u get better

If there is no possibility that you were pregnant and had a miscarriage, this could be to a few different types of gynecological conditions.
Fibroids, especially, will cause heavy and prolonged bleeding.
Good luck at your doctor's appointment. If it was that big of a concern, they'd have had you at the ER.

you didn't mention if and what type of BC you use, this can cause problems.
also didn't say if normal flow, light or heavy
All would need to be known.
Skipping months can make the next period heavier but not usually last that long.

You should see your doctor, but if you are young and just starting to get them, it may take a while for them to become 'normal'. Remember too that 'normal' for one person, isn't 'normal' for everyone.
