I have used questions for several reasons:
-to network for resources for my project
-to share experiences
-nostalgia
-to gather material for research for my job
-curiosity
-raise awareness, try to get people to THINK
-for the hell of it!!

All the above. I ask a lot of different questions with different motives, some are in play, some are serious, some are just to test the waters to see who is out there.I am a very curious person.
Finding out what other people are thinking fascinates me. thanks for the great question.

Sometimes more than one motive may be in play. There's maybe more to it than people want to admit in this public forum. Maybe some of us just want to test the water . . .
You can't always tell sometimes; I think I have to assume the questions are sincere though they may not be. If you think too hard about motivation, you could go bananas.
I am usually looking for information.

I ask questions on issues that I feel are important. The goal is to get some people to think about things that they might not otherwise have thought about, and sometimes to cast some issues in a new light for some.

The dragon makes me do it.
Damned, I just like being alive.
I ask them because I want to make people think.
It is really that simple.
I want to make people think.
You do realize what board we are on right?
I want people to think. That is why I ask my questions.

to know others way of thinking, to compare ideas on the topic at hand, or just for curiosity reason plus boredom.

i generally ask "agree or disagree" types of questions
i'll rant and then ask people if they agree with it or what their opinions are about it...
my questions are loaded and they range in topic usually touching multiple topic categories at once.
