OK are you ready for this 406.3d 3 a of the nec 2005 national electric code is pretty long and boring and hard to type SHUT THE POWER OFF A THE MAIN BREAKER TEST WITH AN APROVED TEST INSTRUMENT AND ENSURE THAT THE CIRCUIT HAS BEEN TURNED OFF
406.3d3a says you can replace with another non grounded type receptacle
d3b says to replace with a gfci receptacle as long as it is marked no equipments ground
d3c replace with a grounding type receptacle supplied through a gfci and also marked no equipment ground and gfci protected there is more I dont feel like typing it

You should get a qualified person to do all electric work it only takes .5 of a milliamp to kill and scraping burnt pajamas off a charred wound is very painfull even WITH loads and loads of pain killers.

First why would you upgrade a rented apartment.
You will need to pull a ground into the box for it to work and since there is no ground now this will be a big job. This is a job for a professional. Don't just change the receptacle as this could be a insurance problem if a fire starts because you replaced the receptacle.

A 3 prong outlet is a grounded outlet. To make it work properly, your supply must also have a ground wire. Usually green. Connect the ground wire from the supply to the green screw on the outlet. Then connect your other wires as they were connected to the other outlet. Be sure to watch your polarity.
