This is what happens when we start using slang and abbreviations.

The word American should be used as the words Asian, African or European, referring to the geographic area not the country. However in the real world it has become the abbreviation for citizens of the 'United States of America'.

You will very seldom hear some one say, "He is North American". They will say either Canadian, American or Mexican.

There are three Americas: North America, Central America and South America.

To confuse thing more if a person uses the term "Latin American" they can be from North, Central or South America.

As to Haitians, being American... that would depend on the politics of the day. Since the Caribbean Islands are between North and South American the could be considered to be part of the Americas. However since the word "American" refers to someone from the U.S. you will never hear a person living in Haiti call themselves an American.

Now to muddy the waters a bit more... Many Haitians do migrate to the U.S., once here many do become American... by their choice.

Haitians are Americans because "American" does NOT mean from the United States, it means from the "Americas" which would include North and South America, and the Caribbean. Therefore, Haitians are most certainly Americans.

By the way, for those who seem not to know, the name "America" never originally referred to the US. When America was "discovered" it was just the Caribbean islands. Then they found the other lands. The reason people from the United States call themselves "American" is not because they think they are the only Americans, but rather because it's much shorter than saying "United States of Americans"- it's a shortened version.

The confusion is centered around the fact that America (as in the US of A) is a country. There are also N, S, and Central America. South Americans refer to those from the USA as Norte Americanas (sp?).

I agree with you, I posted a similar question earlier this morning, it amazes me how so many people are ignorant about this fact, technically everyone who is born in the American Continent is an American, they might no be Us citizens, but they are definitely Americans, including myself, I am from the awesome Caribbean island of the Dominican Republic, there for I proudly am Latin American.

who would think that?

Hatians are Hatians,
the speak French not American.
They were the only successful slave revolution to become a republic. American never had a slave revolution. American interests have been keeping Haiti down since that time.

EDIT:

As a Canadian of Trinidadian descent, I can assure you that despite the fact that both countries are in the "Americas" we would NEVER refer to ourselves as Americans, because of the misappropriation of the word by the USA.
