I have been living with my boyfriend for three years now, this past May we got engaged and will be getting married in september of next year. There are many reasons people live together and then decide to get married. For instance, a couple may not be sure if marriage is for them or may want to find out if they are compatible living mates. Finaces, taxes, health insurance, family pressure, a sese of ceremony and other issues may come into play for some couples.
For other couples though it may be a case of something else. Perhaps one of the individuals is going through a lengthy divorce, and while remarriage is the intent, it may not be possible for quite a few years. Perhaps they were planning on getting married eventually and turned up pregnant first but did not want to marry soley for the baby. Or, maybe they would like to save their money together for a while to afford an extravagant wedding and decide to move in together in the mean time. There are too many reasons to list, it is completely dependent on the couple, their beliefs and their situation. I can, however, tell you why we moved in together and then decided to marry.
John and I fell completely in love and spent EVERY spare moment together to the point that we were always at his house anyway. It was just logical to us to move in together. But we didn't have enough money saved for the wedding we desire, nor was he able to afford the huge diamond he wanted to get for me. We also do not hold any religous beliefs that deter us from living together. It was always understood that eventually we would get married, WHEN was just the case. We were, and still are, happy with the way things are. But for us, a wedding is a public symbol and dedication of our love and commitment to each other. It is a way for us to include our family, friends and loved ones in our love as a couple. Also, the marriage itself, me taking on his last name symbolizes our unity and that in our love we are truely ONE. A wedding is also a giant party to celebrate the love two people share and it is a celebration that my fiance and i are eager to participate in as love should be celebrated in a society that is beggining to belive less and less in love, commitment, sacrifice, unity, and lasting marriages.

This is a good question, because most of the time after they get married sometimes a short while later they leave each other, and they were probably together for years before. Another reason, they want to do the right thing before God and man,and they usually have good intentions, and it does carry more weight.

I've been living with my girlfriend for the past 6 years, and we're very happy, but family is a big pressure point in our relationship, with questions about when we are getting married and so on,sometimes it's just to shut everyone up and get them off your back.

Done that. I lived with my 1st husband for several years then got married. I think when you're just living together it is much happier than when I got married.
My reasons in getting married are commitment, obligation, name change, income tax, had a child & love.

I lived with my husband for 6 years and then we got married. We wanted to have children. We thought it would be better for them if we made it legal. We have 1 daughter and we've been married now for 20 years. If we hadn't decided to have children we wouldn't have gotten married, we would have just continued to live together.

Marriage is a consecrated level of commitment. Its highly formal and recognized as an acceptable social structure in most society. People want to belong to that group.
