I suppose the Italians care about their football heros! But as a non-Italian and fairly knowledgeble fan I must admit that Italian footbal sucks big time! Sure, they have talent, but the coaches should have their priorities straight. Teach them passing skills and how to control their emotions instead of sending them to acting classes and providing extra dollars for the best faked injury.
Let's not be too harsh...the Portugese do an admirable job themselves including Mr Wonderful himself..Figo. So you are not alone.

Yes, I only care that the Italian team gets beaten. Why? (1) Match-fixing is an Italian tradition and not just the recent phenomenon revealed prior to this world cup, (2) Italy always get referee assisted in world cups (watch the replays from 1982 to 1998), which is why they complained so much about 2002 because for once FIFA tried to get the lowly host nation Korea through at the expense of their favourite son Italy, (3) Italian players over react at the slightest body contact (not the behaviour you would expect from self-professed "macho" men!), and (4) Italian players are overrated (the real focus is not on their skills but on their medial appeal) As players they are not so special. Any team can pack the defense the way Italy does.

It's lippi's style. just like cappelo's. No catenaccio. With toni or gilardino, or inzaghi upfront, they use a direct pass. it's not that their pass is awful, but it is a style of direct pass, useful to make a game with slow-rate, which is useful in long-term competition just like world cup. it proved useful, they get a critical free-kick (against ghana and american), they know how to use other set piece, (2 of their goals are from corner. If lippi make it through the final, they probobaly will show a beautiful football, but for now, they need an effective football and less stamina-diminishing.
