The car ran good before the head gasket. we where careful not to move the timming. It started good and runs great tell it warms up, my father said it was running rich. Chiltons said water could damage the o2 senser and there was a lot of it going out the tail pipe. There was still water in the piston.

when headgasket leaks, antifreeze will go out the exhaust (and O2 sensor). Antifreeze in O2 sensor ruins the sensor pretty quick. Make sure all traces of antifreeze are out of the exhaust and replace O2 sensor and go from there.

Sounds like the cam is retarded one tooth. They will run advanced one tooth, but you can't retard them. You need to check your timing again.
