I have had many guinea pigs but only one at a time. By having one they are much more friendly to you. It is best to get one that is as small as a hamster. Make sure you give them some type of box to sleep in like a little house. Use only a water bottle not a bowl. Don't give them iceberg lettece. They can eat carrots, and they love red and yellow bell peppers. They like shreaded paper towels in their house. Use only pine shavings and not cedar, it can cause lung problems. I use to put my g. pig in a little plastic bucket with a towel in the bottom and put him in my lap when I watched tv and petted him. With good care they can live to get around 7 or 8. Get a book on their care and don't give any rabbit pellets, only the kind for g. pigs. If they make a dove sound that means that they really love you as their mate type of thing. I prefer males. Good luck. I think it is wonderful that you are planning this out ahead of time, an animal deserves to have a good and loving home.

Guinea pigs, like many other creatures, are social animals. While they can bond with humans, it is best for the guinea pigs health to keep them in pairs. Also, the best pairs to get are female/female.

Guinea pigs are social animals, and you should consider keeping a same sex pair so they have company. A pair of females is your best choices; a pair of males may be fine but may fight.

Guinea pigs take a lot of special care to keep them healthy. Mine are around 6 yrs old. Study the web below to see if you are going to be able to commit to the care of them, and have the finacial resorces for vet visits.

I started with just one. Then I wanted her to have one litter so got a male. After she did (only one baby lived) I took him to the clinic to get him fixed because I didn't want a herd of them. Three years later, dad and daughter developed numerous tumors and had to be put down. It's been just "The Mrs" for several years now. It's a lot less work to take care of just one but we have to interact with her a lot more now to give her stimulation so she won't die of boredom.

No, we had just 1 for several years. He followed us and begged at the fridge. He was very social, but did well with just the company of us people.

If you get two, and they are opposite sexes, you will have 20 by spring. Many people only have one and they are just fine.
